How to start a conversation

April 14, 2008

Are you new to the world of online dating? Online dating may mean meeting people in the comforts of your own home without having to dress up just to do dating. However, this also means that you have to exert effort to keep the conversation going since this is how you’re going to get to know the person. Knowing how to start a conversation is essential. After all, you won’t be able to establish good rapport with anyone if you don’t begin a conversation.

Using an online dating site for meeting other singles presents challenges that do not occur in conventional dating. You have to know how to be entertaining, intriguing, and clever in order to keep a person interested long enough to have him or her meet you in person. There are people who are already experienced in the world of online dating and can start a conversation easily, while there are those who still find themselves at a loss for words. If you’re among the latter group, then it’s time that you start polishing your chatting skills and let other singles know what you’ve got.

The first thing that you have to do, before you try making conversation with anyone, is to organize your profile. This is the first thing that other singles will look through before they try to get in touch with you, so it’s important that your profile is appealing. Make sure that it showcases your positive traits. Keep in mind that you must not exaggerate, as other people may see through this. Once you have your profile fixed up, you can then begin looking for persons whom you want to start conversations with.

If you’ve got a high self-esteem, then it would be easier for you to break the ice and keep the conversation going. If you’re not really confident, then just tell yourself that everybody feels fear of being rejected. Meeting people and keeping them interested is challenging, but you can do this if you put your mind to it.

When you start a conversation, keep it light and simple. Talk about your interests. Perhaps you two share a love for books, movies, or Chinese cuisine. You might want to talk about your favorite movies or other countries that you dream of going to. Don’t delve into serious topics such as the other person’s past as that might be too personal to discuss on the first conversation.

One of the things that you have to keep in mind is that you have to just be yourself. Sure it’s okay not to mention your flaws, but it’s totally not cool at all to pretend to be someone you’re not. Don’t pretend to like something just because you mean to impress. Don’t make the mistake of telling a story that is not true, of making up experiences that you haven’t really gone through yet. Even though the conversation is done online, it’s still important that you become honest. After all, you wouldn’t want to be lied to, would you?

So just go out there and strike up a conversation with someone you like. Who knows, maybe you’ll meet more people that way not because of the pictures you post on your site, but because of your sparkling wit and good conversational skills.
